Missouri honored by SEC with Sportsmanship award

Missouri is being honored by the Southeastern Conference with the SEC Sportsmanship Award.

The award comes after their outstanding 2013 campaign, prior to which unanimous All-American and SEC Defensive Player of the Year Michael Sam shared openly with his team about his sexual orientation.  Sam’s team and coaches supported him and respected his privacy.

Also chosen by the SEC’s Directors of Athletics: Tennessee men’s basketball team tied for the male award, while the Bulldog equestrian team and the women’s golf coaches of the conference tied for the female honor.

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive added,

“Sportsmanship, civility and social responsibility are marks of character that last a lifetime.  We are proud of these teams from Missouri, Tennessee and Georgia and the women’s golf coaches of the SEC for setting an example for us all.”
