Rice loses starting DT Mouchantaf due to injury

Rice Owls football coach David Bailiff announced that his football program this Fall will be without starting Defensive Tackle Stuart Mouchantaf.  Mouchantaf suffered a setback in his recovery from knee surgery and will now work towards returning for the 2015 season.

Mouchantaf started the first eight games last season before he was injured in the game against UTEP and reinjured his knee during rehabilitation work and required additional surgical repair.

“This is a tough blow because we were excited about having Christian and `Mooch’ back together this season,” Bailiff said. “Dylan Klare, Ross Winship and Cody Henessee all stepped up after he was hurt last season, so we will obviously depend on them heavily this year and I know Chris Thurmond and his defensive staff will look at some other options before we open camp in August.”

In eight games last fall, Mouchantaf was credited with 33 tackles, including 25 over his final five games. He was credited with a career-high eight stops, including 1.5 for loss in the Owls’ overtime win at Tulsa.
