There had been speculation that there was friction at Utah between Coach Kyle Whittingham and Athletic Director Chris Hill. Utah lost key members of their coaching staff: Offensive Coordinator Dave Christensen to Texas A&M and both Defensive Coordinator Kalani Sitaki and Defensive Line coach Ilaisa Tuiaki to Oregon State. These key losses would make most think something is wrong with the program, and yet Utah announced Friday that Kyle Whittingham had been given a 4-year extension that will pay him $2.6 million per year.
“We appreciate the confidence and commitment the University of Utah has shown our program. We have a talented team returning for the 2015 season and we’re excited about the future of Utah football. The number one priority right now is finishing up another outstanding recruiting class.”
Whittingham has been with the program since Urban Meyer’s departure and will work to convince recruits and his staff that there will indeed be stability.
